A few months ago, while shopping, I came across this small hand purse. I remembered how I’ve always wanted a hand purse because it would help me keep an account of my notes and cards, yet I’ve never bought one.In that moment, I threw caution to the wind and put that attractive purse in my cart. It was a bargain at AED 5/-.
Now I use it all the time, which makes me wonder why I waited so long to buy this small, inexpensive thing that has made such a difference in my life. I realize you’re probably wondering how lame my life is that I’m this excited about a new hand purse but it ended up being a moment that changed the way I view the small moments in life.
We all have them; those small moments or things that often go unnoticed or unappreciated because we think they’re either insignificant or we take them for granted because we live in a culture that celebrates big accomplishments. But what if we made it a habit to embrace and celebrate the small things? Real life, is happening all around us while we’re waiting for the big thing we hope is going to give us some sort of inner peace, contentment or joy. The truth is that often the things that matter most are the small ones.
Forget objects, let's talk about behavior, let's talk about our personalities, let's talk about us as individuals. Do we really take out the time to appreciate the little things around us or the little things a friend or a teacher or a parent does for us? I really doubt that...Here are three reasons why the little things should matter to you.
1. Little things shape your character.
Your character really isn’t formed by the big events of your life. Instead, who you are is ultimately determined by the small choices you make every day.
When you choose to do what’s right every chance you get, you’re more likely to stick to your principles when the pressure is really on.
2. Little things define your future.
Legendary basketball coach, John Wooden said, “Little things make big things happen.” World-class athletes live by that mantra every day. They know that putting their sweat behind the scenes can lead to greater performance in the limelight.
The same is true for all of us. The seemingly mundane choices we make each day, determines our path, and that path determines our success or our failure. Want to make a difference in the world? Handle the little things with integrity.
3. Little things can expand your influence.
Somewhere in your sphere of influence, someone is aching for a little encouragement, just a simple word of hope or a small act of kindness.
You hold the power to build people up or tear them down. By choosing encouragement, you’re choosing leadership. And leadership increases influence. But it all starts with doing the little things that help others.
Of course, the little things can be easy to miss. After all, they’re little. And in a fast-paced, chaotic environment, the newest and shiniest toys can distract us from the details that really count. You’ve got to be intentional when you look for the little things. It’s a lot of work, but it’s worth the extra effort.
Why? Because little things really do matter.
